1993 began the 4th generation Camaro with another major redesign… and another stint as the official Indy 500 Pace car. This was the fourth time that Camaro had paced the racers at the Brickyard, which at the time was a record. 1982 ushered in the all new third generation Camaro and once again it was selected for Indianapolis 500 Pace car duty. The new Camaro was lighter, smaller and had a shorter wheelbase. Although a V8 was offered, it’s superb handling was the focus rather than the shear horsepower of the muscle car era. For the second time in just two years the Camaro was asked back again as the official Indianapolis 500 Pace car. This time the Chevrolet marketing team took full advantage of the publicity by creating 3,675 limited edition Indy 500 Pace Car replica Camaros for sale to the public. These were sent only to select dealers who had to pre-order the number of Pace cars they wanted. This package (RPO Z11) added a mere $36.90 to the price of the Camaro. When the Camaro was introduced in 1967 it was an exciting time. The muscle car market was just heating up and Ford had a 3 year jump start on Chevrolet with the record selling Mustang.
