Needs Work – 1969 Camaro Pace Car
Project Camaro Pace Car sells for $13,100
When does a parts car still command a five figure price tag? Apparently when it’s a highly collectible 1969 Camaro Pace Car. That’s exactly what happened when a recent eBay auction offered up this barn find Indy 500 Pace car Camaro for sale.
Chevy produced 3,675 limited edition Pace Car replica Camaros for 1969; all RS/SS convertibles. This was actually the second time the Camaro was honored as the official Indy 500 pace car since it was introduced in 1967. These are sometimes referred to as Z11 Camaros since that was the pre-order numbr (RPO) that Chevrolet used for special productions like this. For more info see the Indy 500 Camaro Pace Cars article.
This particular Pace Car Camaro needs a lot of work. It’s been sitting for over 25 years! Unfortunately it’s not exactly a “barn find” since it’s been neglected out in the weather without even the benefit of a barn for shelter. The interior is trashed, the convertible top is gone, the top mechanism is rusted and the floor pans are swiss cheese. The rear left quarter panel was sliced off at some point, probably with the intention of replacing a damaged panel. Several key parts are missing including original engine, transmission, trunk lid, hood and bumpers. The front end suffered an accident and the grille is trashed.
These Camaros are certainly rare, desirable and worth restoring. But the starting price on this one was maybe a little higher then one would expect for the condition. Good luck to the new owner! We’d love to see photos when it’s back on the road.
